Chapter 23

Daniel and Jonathon. Police station, middle of town. Nine hours, twenty minutes after zero hour.

“What do you mean there isn’t any evidence that’s been brought in yet?” Daniel asked the woman, Peggy was her name, for the third time.

“The officer, who was called to the scene of the shooting, hasn’t ever come to the station with any evidence—”

Jonathon moved quickly to Daniel’s side and was about to slap her when Daniel stopped him. “Brother. I suggest you recheck the cellblocks—”

“We’ve already checked them,” he said, through gritted teeth.

“Check again,” Daniel said slowly, barely keeping his composure intact.

Daniel was not a big man, but he had a big reputation within the Order. Even as much as Jonathon wanted to challenge him—had already challenged him—he understood to only push so far. Besides, he’d soon be in charge. Daniel represented the old guard. Jonathon’s generation, the younger generation, would usher in the new age for his country and people. All Daniel’s generation ever did was sit back and wait. Those days were over. The mission they were on proved that.

Jonathon nodded slightly and did as he was told.

Daniel waited until Jonathon had left what he concluded was an interrogation room, even though he didn’t think the Yeong-Eo would’ve called it that. It was too tough of a name. They preferred nice terms for everything, including rooms where suspects were held for hours and hours, and in hard conditions, until they talked. “Speak.”

“I’ll tell you again—”

Daniel smacked her. “Think before you speak.”

Peggy rubbed her face. Her eyes narrowed as she tilted her head forward. Her eyes bore holes into his as she said, "The evidence isn't, here." The here came out in a hiss.

She was telling the truth, Daniel concluded. He rotated his neck. It popped and cracked. He then turned to her and said, "I'm sorry." In an instant his rifle was up, and he shot her in the head before she could respond. The momentum of the bullet caused her to fall out of the stool she'd been sitting on. Daniel left the room before she'd stopped twitching.

Fast footfalls came at him from down the hallway. Seeing Daniel, Jonathon slowed down to a fast walk. "The woman?" He asked.

"She was telling the truth."

The look on Jonathon's face was one of surprise. He nodded his approval.

"I have no issue killing the Yeong-Eo. I do have an issue as to when it should be done. You will listen to me and follow my lead, or you will find yourself amongst them. Do you understand?"

Jonathon was taken off guard. He stumbled over his words. "Yes," he started in English before quickly switching to Korean. "Ne Hyeongje (Yes brother)."

"We need a way out of here."

"There are no exits out of here except the way we came."

The deadened thuds of pounding fists on the heavy metal door let both men know how difficult of an option that would be. The images that filled the nearby security monitors provided further proof of that difficulty.

Daniel counted twenty Yeong-Eo waiting outside.
